The Devonian Period, 409 - 360 million years ago, belongs to the fish. It was the peak of global sea level rise. By this time the fishes had evolved into the most efficient animals in the sea. By the late Devonian they began to colonize the land as they developed lungs for breating air, and paired limbs for mobility on land, giving rise to the first land vertebrates, the amphibians. The now extinct cephlopod mollusks, called ammonites, also flourished in the seas together with a diverse population of trilobite arthropods. The earliest insect arthropods, the "springtails" moved out of the sea and the first plants with seeds began to forest the land. |
